At Creek Dental of Salt Lake City and Layton, our dentists provide a number of restorative procedures, and one we do frequently is place porcelain crowns. Although crowns are made from a variety of materials, porcelain is by far the most popular choice due to the benefits this material offers.
A crown, sometimes referred to as a cap, is a prosthetic tooth. It fits snugly over the remaining portion of a patient’s natural tooth, protecting it from damage and functioning as a healthy tooth would.
Some crowns are made of metal, and although these can be cheaper, they tend to be unpopular among patients because they are more noticeable and less attractive than porcelain crowns. When you get a porcelain crown, our dentists match the crown to the color of your teeth so no one will ever know you have a crown.
Most patients need crowns because their natural tooth has suffered damage or is in advanced stages of decay. When caught early, a cavity may be repaired by removing the decay and replacing it with a filling. However, sometimes the decay has progressed too far, and too much of the tooth must be removed for a filling to work.
Sometimes a filling that has been in a patient’s mouth for many years falls out. When our dentists attempt to replace it, they may discover more decay, or they may notice that the tooth has cracked. In either of these instances, it is sometimes better to get a crown than to attempt to reconstruct the tooth and hold it together with an inlay or onlay.
Crowns must be custom constructed for your mouth. Our dentists will take an impression of your tooth and then send it to a laboratory to have the crown made. This process takes 10 days to a week, and our dentists will fit you with a temporary crown to wear during this time.
Once your new crown has arrived, you return to our office for placement. This is usually quick, easy, and painless. Our dentists use a special cement to affix the new crown to your tooth permanently.
Crowns last many years — sometimes a lifetime, with proper care. If you are a fan of popcorn, nuts, and other hard foods, your crown will take more abuse and may not last as long as if you stayed away from these foods, but it is still safe to eat whatever you want when you have a crown.
It is our dentists’ goal to help ensure your optimal dental health. Oftentimes placing a crown is part of achieving this goal. Crowns are a safe and effective way to replace teeth that may have broken or suffered decay.
If you have a cracked tooth, lost filling, pain, or another dental issue, a crown might be the solution. Call Creek Dental, serving Salt Lake City and Layton, and make an appointment today.
