For patients in Salt Lake City and Layton with missing teeth, the dentists at Creek Dental recommend dental implants. They are the best solution to the problem of missing teeth because they are long-lasting and are the closest thing you can get to natural teeth.
When you lose a tooth, even if it’s a molar and you think no one can tell, not getting it replaced is a bad decision. Primarily, this is because besides your tooth performing its function of chewing food, it’s a placeholder, and without it, your other teeth will begin to migrate. This can leave gaps between your other teeth and completely undo the effects of orthodontia.
Further, your jaw will begin to atrophy in the spot with the missing tooth, causing you to lose bone mass. This can, in turn, cause your face to have a sunken appearance in the areas with missing teeth.
Dental implants function just like real teeth. Our dentists start by placing a metal post in patients’ jaws. This is the sturdy base on which the implant sits. Over time, your body grows bone around the implanted post, making it part of your body.
Some patients who have waited years to get their implants and have suffered bone loss, as a result, may need a bone graft before this step. This process is fairly straightforward; however, if it is necessary, the patient must wait a period of time for the bone graft to fuse and grow.
Once the metal post is safely integrated into the jaw, our dentist attaches an abutment, and finally the crown. Your dental implant then becomes a permanent part of your mouth, functioning just like your natural teeth.
From start to finish, getting dental implants can take months. It depends on the health of the patient and the condition of their mouth. Other factors include whether they need bone grafting and how quickly the body adapts to the implant.
Some people consider the time it takes to complete the procedure a drawback, but dental implants are a much stronger, better, and longer-lasting solution to missing teeth than bridges.
That being said, some patients opt for bridges over dental implants for financial reasons. Insurance companies consider replacing missing teeth to be a cosmetic procedure and usually will not pay for the cost, leaving it for the patient to bear. However, our dentists urge patients to keep in mind that although dental implants cost more than bridges, it is not necessarily significantly more, and the result is far superior.
If you have one or more missing teeth, call Creek Dental in Salt Lake City or Layton and make an appointment to find out more about dental implants and whether they are right for you. Our dentists want you to get your beautiful smile back!
