Dental Fillings

To restore teeth that may be impacted by decay or trauma, the general dentists at Creek Dental of Salt Lake City and Layton offer dental fillings. Dental fillings are a common restoration that many people require at some point in their lives.

If our family dentists discover during a checkup that you or your child has a cavity, we will recommend you book a follow-up appointment to get a dental filling. At this appointment, our dentists remove the decay and replace it with a restorative material.

Creek Dental offers several types of fillings:

Composite Dental Fillings

Composite dental fillings are the most common type. They are made of a blend of ceramic and plastic materials and they’re popular because they closely match the color of your teeth, so no one can tell you have a filling. They are, however, slightly less durable than amalgam fillings.

Amalgam Dental Fillings

Some patients choose amalgam dental fillings — made from an amalgam of metals — because they are cheaper than composite dental fillings. For this reason, they are very strong and durable. But they are also silver-colored, so this makes them a less-desirable choice for many. If the filling is way at the back of the mouth, however, it might not be as easily seen when laughing, talking, or eating.

Ceramic Dental Fillings

Ceramic dental fillings are made of porcelain, so they also offer a more pleasing aesthetic appearance than amalgam fillings. They are also more durable than composite fillings and more resistant to staining, so they offer the best of the other two options.

The Truth About Cavities & Fillings

Many patients are understandably disappointed to learn they or their children have cavities. They think they are somehow to blame or that they have failed. And while it is true that cavities can be the result of poor brushing practices, this isn’t always the case.

Man at the dentist

The shape of your teeth is dependent on genetics. Some teeth have more grooves and are more convoluted than others. Teeth like these tend to harbor more bacteria, and their shape makes it difficult to remove with a toothbrush.

Today, more can be done for our patients in Layton and Salt Lake City to prevent the formation of cavities. This includes putting fluoride in drinking water and applying sealants to children’s teeth to keep out bacteria.

Dental Filling Procedure

However, no dental procedure can completely eliminate the threat of cavities. Many patients are unhappy to hear they have a cavity because they fear the process of getting a dental filling. But let us reassure you: You will not feel any pain when our general dentists remove your cavity and place your restorative filling.

Our dentists use a numbing agent to render your tooth insensitive to pain throughout the procedure. This numbing sensation wears off after a few hours, during which time we advise patients not to eat, drink, or chew gum, due to the danger of injuring themselves unknowingly in the process.

So relax, and rest assured that it’s much better to get a cavity taken care of right away with a dental filling than it is to wait, risking further damage. If you have tooth pain or are due for a checkup, call our dental offices in Salt Lake City and Layton and make an appointment today.
