If you have one or more missing teeth, you may want to consider having them replaced with a dental bridge. The dentists at Creek Dental of Salt Lake City and Layton fit our patients with dental bridges to restore function and appearance.
Patients may be missing teeth for a number of reasons. The most common is decay, but patients can lose teeth due to gum disease, automobile accidents, sports injuries, and other traumas as well.
Although the gold standard for replacing missing teeth is dental implants, some patients opt for dental bridges instead. Dental implants are permanent replacement teeth that are implanted into the jaw and look and feel natural.
A dental bridge is also permanent — it isn’t made to come out of the mouth the way dentures are — but the tooth (or teeth) is not implanted into the gums. For this reason, it looks and functions like a natural tooth, but it is possible for food to get stuck under the bridge. This problem can usually be resolved with interdental picks.
Our dentists place traditional dental bridges by affixing a prosthetic tooth to one or more neighboring teeth (hence the term “bridge”). With this type of bridge, the neighboring teeth are cut down and fitted with crowns. The two crowns and the false tooth are created as one unit, and the crowns are cemented over your natural teeth.
The reason many patients opt for a bridge over dental implants is cost. Insurance often doesn’t pay for either of these procedures, since insurance companies consider tooth replacement to be cosmetic rather than medically necessary, so patients must pay out of pocket. However, Creek Dental knows this can be challenging for many patients, and that’s why we offer convenient payment plans — we know how important it is to replace missing teeth.
Another reason some patients get dental bridges is that they are not good candidates for implant procedures. Some medical conditions prevent the use of certain types of anesthesia, which is necessary for dental implants. Young patients who are not done growing are also not good candidates for dental implants.
If you are missing one or more teeth, a dental bridge might be a good option for you. Call the Creek Dental office in Salt Lake City or Layton and make an appointment for an evaluation today.
